VOID is committed to leading the way for true, meaningful changes in the way impaired driving is viewed in Oklahoma. Our advocacy efforts through speaking engagements, public outreach events and training are all done with one thing in mind...PREVENTION. This will always be our primary goal and focus. However, when prevention fails, our advocacy efforts turn to supporting legislative changes that will bring swift, fair, & consistent consequences that provide justice to the victims and their families who have paid the ultimate price for another’s crime.
Raising awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and the ever-increasing severity of the problem in Oklahoma is one of the most important goals of VOID. Our team is constantly looking for opportunities to speak to anyone who will listen. Since the beginning of VOID, we have had the opportunity to participate in public outreach through community events, high school assemblies, youth academies, and college campus activities. If your group or civic organization would like us to share with your group, please contact us today!
A few of the events we've done so far...
While not one parent, sibling, grandparent, family member or friend ever wanted to be the voice for DUI reform in Oklahoma, we recognize that we have an opportunity to honor our loved ones and use our painful stories to help others. From sharing our story to teaching others about DUI victims and how to prevent more of them, VOID is always seeking opportunities to speak and teach groups about DUI from a victims’ perspective - the one that is most often overlooked. We have been blessed with many opportunities so far and look forward to continuing this effort.
Many of our families speak to DUI offenders at VIPs (Victim Impact Panels) throughout the state. We have also had the privilege to speak at the OHSO Traffic Safety Summit and we have shared our thoughts about the criminal justice process with Victim Advocates from all over the state. The Traffic Homicide Unit of the OHP provided us a chance to share with them, as has the District Attorneys Council. VOID was honored to be invited to be the Keynote Speaker at the Victims Rights Ceremony hosted by the Oklahoma legislature.
If your group or event would benefit from learning more about VOID and our stories, please contact us. We’d love to help.
The first Tuesday in February marks the beginning of the 2025 new legislative session. Several bills will be introduced that we believe will have a good impact on reducing DUI offenses in Oklahoma.
Be willing to let your voice be heard! Calling or sending an email to your legislator really does make a difference. You can find your legislator’s contact information on the Oklahoma Legislature's website.
You can also attend our DUI Victims Awareness Day at the state capitol on February 17, 2025. The larger the crowd, the louder the message that Oklahoma citizens are saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH; it’s time to end the ~ 500 DUI deaths every year in our state.
Since our inception in July 2023, families who have experienced the preventable tragedy of a DUI fatality, have banded together to support each other and make a real difference so that other families can avoid what we have experienced. We do what we do for YOU and your loved ones - so you are safer on Oklahoma roadways.
Our organization has been hard at work and we believe we are being heard. In just 18 short months we have grown to include 150 families. We have met with many of our state legislators, 10 state agencies, 9 District Attorneys and over 50+ county Victims Advocates. We have visited with at least 5 judges and 6 additional relevant stakeholders in our effort to prevent DUI deaths.
VOID had a presence in over 13 different county court proceedings supporting 29 individual victims and their families.
During the 59th Oklahoma Legislative Session, several bills were introduced and supported by our organization. One of these bills, SB3960, was PASSED and signed by Governor Stitt on April 22, 2024. This bill removed the DUI exception to a law that denied probation to an offender on their 3rd felony. Many DUI fatalities are caused by repeat offenders, so thanks to SB3960, they will no longer be able to receive probation and simply return to the streets. VOID is grateful to the bill’s authors and many supporters and to Governor Stitt for signing it into law.
We will continue all efforts to support victims’ families, raise awareness of the severity of this issue in Oklahoma and support all legislation that seeks to prevent future tragedies and deter others from committing this senseless crime.
Please contact us if you’d like to join us at any upcoming events to support safer driving in Oklahoma. DUI injuries and fatalities are 100% preventable! If you are an event organizer, we are also available to speak at your event or support other efforts that align with our goals, as shown in our event schedule below.
